A few years back, I went through a little mid-twenties career crisis. I was really enjoying my job, but the continual banging of my head against the glass ceiling was starting to give me a real headache, so when approached with an attractive offer from another firm who seemed to appreciate employees regardless of their gender, it looked pretty tempting.
In need of some career advice, I approached my aunt who is by far the most successful business woman that I know personally. Essentially, I said, “the real problem here is I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.” It turned into a bit of a running joke between us. Ultimately, she had some good words of wisdom which helped me navigate my problem at hand, but what I liked the best, was a few days later this little plaque arrived in the mail:
The accompanying note said:
“Julie, you will figure this out, just never forget who you are and always be true to yourself”
As I land in different offices along the route of my career path, that’s one wall hanging that will always make the trip.
